Android 2.0.4 is here

New features. Improved reliability.

by Sean Wheeler (@gcsports)

The goal of Version 2.0.4 was to add the features previously missing from the Android app, while increasing the usability, reliability and stability. As always, we welcome and appreciate your feedback. Download Version 2.0.4 now.

Android 2.0.4 is still in “beta” testing. There are some glitches we’re still ironing out. Thanks for your patience as we continue to improve GameChanger for Android.

Pre-Game

Home Screen Redesign

The new home screen makes it easier to jump into a game, score for the correct team, or score a practice practice game.

Introductory Slide Show

It is now easier than ever for new users to get started with GameChanger. An opening slide show, will guide you from team creation to first pitch. If you are still having any difficulties, our support team is ready to help.

Offline Login

The new version of the GameChanger scorekeeping app allows users to sign into their GameChanger account without connection to either the internet or a GameChanger server.

You will need to have logged into your account, on the app, at least once with an internet connection before you can login without one. The online connection will establish a user history on the device that will be referenced when your device signs you in offline. Learn more.

In-Game

In-app spray charts

Now you can see where batters have put the ball in play, analyze tendencies, and make in-game adjustments with dynamic in-app spray charts on every batter.

Bunt menu

A more complete bunt menu allows you to score more bunt scenarios to gain a better understanding of your team’s success with the bunt. Learn how to score a bunt.

Advanced fielding

Turn on “Advanced Fielding” to track assists and putouts for your team and opponents. Learn how.

Pitch types

It is now possible to track pitch types for both baseball (fastball, curveball, slider, changeup, cutter) and softball (fastball, changeup, riseball, dropball, screwball, curveball, drop curve, cutter, knuckleball, knucklecurve) specific pitches. Learn how.

Post-Game

Pitching decisions

Admins may manually add wins, losses, saves, and blown saves from within the scorekeeping application. Learn how.

Play Editing

When editing a play from within the scorekeeping app, we urge scorekeepers to use the “Undo” button when possible. However, we understand the challenges scorekeepers face when trying to get every play correct while keeping up with the game. So whether you missed a sub, incorrectly charged a player with an error, or mistakenly credited a batter with a hit, you may now edit these plays (as well as their participants) and the game stats will be updated and reflected in season-to-date stats and play-by-play. Learn how.

Rebuilt Sync

Android 2.0.4 features an entirely re-built sync process for more reliability and stability. When you upgrade to the latest version, any previous data will be switched to the new sync structure.

We will continue to improve GameChanger for Android this winter. Please follow us on Facebook and Twitter for future updates and releases.

Creating a New Season for Your Team

Feature of the Week: May 13

by Dane Menten-Weil & Jeff Kamrath

Rolling into Summer

Here at GameChanger HQ in New York City, temperatures are beginning to climb above 70 degrees for the first time this year. And while it feels as though spring has only just begun here in the northeast, the sad truth is that the spring baseball / softball season is already on it’s way out the door. With high school teams heading into district playoffs, summer travel teams have, for the most part, already filled out their rosters.

With that in mind, GameChanger has developed a few tools to assist coaches with their transition from spring to summer both on and off the field.

Creating a New Season

There are two options when creating a new season for your team on GameChanger.

or better yet…

  • Simply create a new season for your existing team (see above video). Doing so provides you with the option to link players from your previous season to your new one.

Linking your team across multiple seasons gives you the ability to link players from one team to the next, bypassing the step for creating an entirely new roster in addition to having the ability to view player’s stats for past and present seasons.

For a player linked across multiple seasons, coaches can access multiple season’s worth of stats via a drop down menu in the player’s profile page (see image below).

What happens to my Fans?

Unfortunately, creating a new season for your team and linking players does not automatically import your FanBase.  Fans must follow your team’s new season in the same manner as they followed you last season.

GameChanger of the Week (5/11)

Finally, the snow clears

by Jeff Kamrath

Player of the Week: Jake Bohne – P/1B, Post 22 Varsity

Glad to Be Outdoors

With such a brutal winter for the Northern Midwest, it’s not hard to believe that baseball season just started last week! Teams in Florida, Georgia, Texas and California are already 3+ months deep into their seasons, but we’re glad to see the entire country playing ball.

What’s even more unbelievable is the start that Jake Bohne, of the Post 22 Varsity Hardhatters, has had.  Winters in Rapid City, SD can be tough. Finding your timing and stroke after being cooped up at the Post 22 indoor baseball facility all winter can be tougher. Tougher than trying to escape from Chinese finger-traps? Maybe not. But it’s still hard!

Quality At-Bats = Quality Hitter

In his first week of action this year, Jake rolled along to the tune of a .538 average with an unreal 1.281 OPS.  However, what’s most impressive are his Quality At-Bat stats. To date, in his 17 plate appearances, Jake has an astounding 12 QAB’s, including 7 hard hit balls and 4 two-out RBI. Additionally, he has seen 6+ pitches in an at-bat 23.5% of the time.

We expect great things this season after a start like this!

Congrats on a great week Jake!

GameChanger of the Week (5/4)

No-hitters abound!

by Jeff Kamrath (@GCSports)

Player of the Week: Stephen Bonser – P/OF/IF, Washington University

It seems like no-hitters are a theme this week, but unlike Francisco Liriano, Stephen Bonser, of Washington University, had a more conventional line score when it came to his no-hitter this past Sunday.

View the Auto-Recap of the game.

Bonser held Fontbonne hitless over the course of the 7.0 inning no-no, striking out nine and walking none.  He was almost perfect save for a dropped fly ball in the 6th inning.

Contributing to his success, Bonser threw 70.8% of his pitches for strikes as well as delivering 63.6% of his first pitches for strikes.  He averaged just over 10 pitches per inning and had an incredible swing and miss percentage of 15.7%.  Bonser dominated early and often by attacking Fontbonne hitters, registering a 74.4% strike percentage with his fastball.

Liriano-no

Ugly.  Gross.  Unclean.  Impure.  Surely we can’t be talking about one of baseball’s most revered single game accomplishments.  But, with six walks and only two strikeouts, Francisco Liriano managed to get sportswriters and fans everywhere to cringe when they look at the stat line of baseball’s 249th no-hitter.  In addition to his unimpressive stat line, Liriano entered the game with a 9.13 ERA and in jeopardy of losing his slot in the Minnesota Twins’ rotation.

She Does It All

While it’s tough to outdo a no-hitter, Madi Savell gave it her best shot with a great week at the plate for the 99 Texas Elite.  On the weekend, Madi was 6 for 12 with five Quality At-Bats and three RBI’s.  Four of those QAB’s and two of her RBI’s came in one game alone.

Congrats Stephen and Madi!

Feature of the Week: In-app Tutorials

Step-By-Step Tutorials

by Dane Menten-Weil & Jeff Kamrath (@GCSports)

As intuitive as the GameChanger Scorekeeper app is, we understand that there is a learning curve when it comes to becoming comfortable with digitally scoring a baseball game.  Keeping this in mind, we have designed a series of step-by-step tutorials for the iPhone / iPod version of GameChanger’s Scorekeeper app that can be found inside the app.

These tutorials are particularly useful for the coach or scorekeeper who are not especially tech-savvy.  Each tutorial takes just a few minutes to complete and guides you through the intuitive scorekeeping and lineup flows.  Once complete, a new user should be knowledgeable enough to score their first game immediately following completing the tutorials.

What’s In the Tutorials?

The tutorials walk users through some of these basic scorekeeping flows:

Scorekeeping

  • Scoring individual pitches;
  • Balls in play;
  • Advancing runners;
  • Putouts / defensive plays.

Lineup Management

  • Adding a batter to lineup;
  • Editing player info;
  • Substitutions;
  • Viewing in-game spray charts.

Practice a Game

Once you have completed the tutorials you may want to access an additional feature to further aid you, called Practice Game.  Also located in the app, beneath the tutorials, the Practice Game feature allows you to score a few plays or even an entire game at your own pace.  For example, follow a Major League game on TV, scoring every play as best you can and you will be a pro by the time the starting pitcher hits the showers..

Note: Practice Game data is not synced to your team page online.
